Preparing to give birth at Darent Valley in Dartford

Finding out you’re pregnant can bring a huge mix of emotions — excitement, joy, overwhelm, uncertainty and often a lot of questions too. For many women in Dartford and the surrounding areas, one of the first practical decisions during pregnancy is choosing where to receive maternity care and give birth.

If you’re considering Darent Valley Hospital, it can be reassuring to understand your options early in pregnancy, from the different birth settings available to the types of support that can help you feel calmer and more prepared throughout the months ahead.

Whether you’re exploring antenatal classes, thinking about your birth preferences or simply trying to understand what to expect over the coming months, learning more about your local maternity services can help pregnancy feel a little less overwhelming and a lot more empowering.

Registering for Maternity Care at Darent Valley Hospital

One helpful thing to know is that you do not need to visit your GP before registering for maternity care.

You can self-refer directly to Darent Valley Hospital using the maternity self-referral form on the hospital website. Many women choose to do this shortly after finding out they are pregnant.

Birth Options at Darent Valley Hospital

Darent Valley Hospital offers different birth settings depending on your pregnancy, preferences and medical needs.

THE DELIVERY SUITE AT DARENT VALLEY

The consultant-led Delivery Suite is designed for women who may need additional monitoring, medical support or intervention during labour.

The suite includes:

  • 8 delivery rooms
  • a birthing pool room
  • 2 obstetric theatres
  • a high-dependency unit

This environment is fully equipped for both straightforward and more medically complex births.

Many women planning hospital births feel reassured knowing that additional support is available if needed.

DARENT VALLEY BIRTH CENTRE

Darent Valley Hospital also has an on-site midwife-led Birth Centre for women with low-risk pregnancies. The Birth Centre is often described as having a more relaxed, home-from-home feel compared with a traditional labour ward.

The Birthing Centre consists of four birthing rooms, two of these can be used for water births, all rooms offer the use of birthing aids (balls, bean bags, mats) and a four bedded postnatal bay.

Many women choose the Birth Centre because they would like a more low-intervention birth experience while still being within the hospital setting. Your midwife can help discuss which birth setting may be suitable for you during pregnancy.

It’s also important to remember that birth preferences can change during labour, and flexibility is often a valuable part of preparing emotionally for birth. The benefit of Darent Valley birth centre is that if your birth plans change, you can easily transfer over to the on site delivery suite.

HOME BIRTH OPTIONS IN DARTFORD AND GRAVESEND

Darent Valley Hospital also supports home birth for women living within the local community catchment area, depending on suitability and midwife availability.

For some women, simply knowing they have different birth options available can help them feel more informed and empowered during pregnancy. For most people home births are completely safe, you will have two midwives with you at the birth and can hire a birthing pool for your own exclusive use.

Where Is the Maternity Unit at Darent Valley Hospital?

The maternity unit at Darent Valley Hospital is located on Level 3, West Wing.

During normal daytime hours, you can enter through the main hospital entrance and use the lifts or stairs to reach Level 3, then turn right.

If you arrive out of hours, the main hospital entrance may be locked, and access is usually via the A&E entrance before making your way to the maternity unit.

Many women find it reassuring to familiarise themselves with:

  • where to park
  • which entrance to use
  • how to access Level 3
  • where birthing partners should enter

before labour begins.

Even knowing these small practical details ahead of time can help reduce anxiety as your due date approaches.

Visiting Information and Birth Partners

One question many parents have is how many people can attend the birth. At Darent Valley Hospital:

  • two birthing partners are usually allowed during established labour in both the Delivery Suite and Birth Centre
  • one nominated birth partner can stay during your inpatient postnatal stay
  • visiting hours and sibling visiting times may vary, so it’s always worth checking the latest hospital guidance closer to your due date

Many women also find it reassuring to discuss practical birth partner plans in advance, including:

  • parking
  • snacks
  • overnight essentials
  • communication preferences during labour

Preparing Emotionally for a Hospital Birth

One common misconception is that hypnobirthing is only for home birth. In reality, hypnobirthing can be incredibly helpful for hospital birth too. Luckily, many midwives at Darent Valley hospital are trained in, or at least familiar with, hypnobirhting techniques. This means that they can fully support you to have a calm birth with a peaceful environment.

Hypnobirthing techniques are not about having a “perfect” birth. Instead, they focus on:

  • breathing
  • relaxation
  • reducing fear and tension
  • understanding the body during labour
  • feeling informed and involved in decision making

These tools can support all types of births at Darent Valley, including:

  • spontaneous labour
  • induction
  • epidural birth
  • assisted birth
  • caesarean birth

Many women find that practising breathing and relaxation techniques before labour helps them feel calmer when arriving at the hospital environment.
